Education System

In the 1800s, universities were tightly regulated and only accepted males. To evade authorities, courses were secretly taught and conducted in private residences. Meetings were relocated from place to place, garnering the nickname "Floating or Flying University." Marie Curie (1867-1934) was a Polish-born French physicist who won the Nobel Prize twice for her research.

Universities in Poland are classed as either private or public. Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees are available to International students. Degrees achieved in Poland are globally recognised, with part-time or full-time study options. Full-time lessons throughout the week allow students to take advantage of weekend cultural events. Part-time classes or sessions are conducted on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the semester, and evening studies on weekday afternoons.

The academic year runs from October to June and is divided into two semesters, a winter semester and a summer one, each lasting 4-5 months. During the exam period, you either pass an exam or earn credits through essays, extracurricular activities, or other comparable activities to attend the following semester. You will be awarded a professional academic degree after graduating, submitting a thesis, and passing the final test.

Poland conforms to the Bologna criteria and has the following educational structure:

  • First Study Cycle: After completing the first cycle of study (three to four years), you will be awarded the professional title licence equal to a Bachelors degree. The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) used in Poland is a European Higher Education Area (EHEA) standard.
  • Second Study Cycle: After completing a 1.5 to 2-year Masters degree, you will be given the professional title of Master. This degree emphasises academic knowledge as well as the application and growth of creative talents.
  • Long Study Cycle: This Masters degree takes 4.5 to 6 years to complete and is based on an integrated study programme in which you will study the fundamentals of your subject and conduct an in-depth specialisation.
  • Third Study Cycle: The third cycle is a doctorate-level programme that lasts 3-4 years after completing a Masters degree programme. It is provided to students by universities and research organisations. You must successfully defend your dissertation and pass a doctorate examination to receive this degree.
