The University of Northampton has an impressive history that has progressed since the preceding years of the 20th century. The history of the University dates back to 1924, where it was first established as a technical college. By 1975, the Nene College was introduced through the conflation of three prominent colleges of Education, Technology, and Art. In the early 90s, the Nene College passed on its educational provisions to more colleges in Northamptonshire and went on to direct their ambitions to higher education. The following years led to the integration of Occupational Therapy and Nursing studies into the Nene College. Its campus (Waterside campus) is located in Northampton NN1 5PH, Northamptonshire, England.

The first alumni of the university were:
- Sir David O’Dowd, appointed as Assistant Chief Constable of the Northampton police and later as Chief Constable. Awarded for Fellowship in November 1993.
- Peter Ellwood, a Chairman of ICI and a former Chief Executive of Lloyds and Barclaycard who was also the foundation governor for Nene College. Awarded as Doctorate of Laws in July 1994.
- Gina Ogden, a County Councillor with the longest service since 1967. Currently serving as the Chairman of Adult social care and health scrutiny committee and as the Governor of the Northampton Performing Arts and Music service.
- Ben Saunders, a world record-breaking polar explorer and long-distance skier who leads the most hard-driving polar journeys. He was the first of completely the 105-day, 1,800-mile trek to retrace the journey of Captain Robert Falcon Scott.
