The University’s origin dates back to 1825, where there was an attempt of setting up an institution of Science and Mechanics but due to a financial crisis that occurred throughout the year it had to stand down. It later became part of the Huddersfield Philosophy Society. Most consider the University’s history to have started in 1841 in which five youngsters with their employer took the initiative of setting up a library and educational classes where lessons on reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar, geography, design, and French were taught by experts with good experience. The increasing development of the institution finally led to the establishment of the Department of Science and Art. In 1883, a merger with the Female Educational Institute took place and became the Technical School and Mechanic’s Institute. It became the Technical College and again changed its name to the College of Technology in 1958. By 1970, it was incorporated with the Oastler College of Education and became Huddersfield Polytechnic and was inaugurated by the Education Secretary. In 1992, the Polytechnic became the University of Huddersfield and achieved its university status.
