Visa Requirements

A study permit and Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) are required for Indian students to study in Canada as a prerequisite.

What is a study permit?

Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) deals with study permits for education in Canada. This permit is provided to the student once enrolled on a course. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or visitor visa accompanies the student permit to allow students to enter Canada, not for education approval.

Canada's International Student Program: As the number of international students enrolling in Canadian Universities is multiplying every year, the International Student Program enables students to extend their study permit in Canada, apply for a job and work towards gaining a permanent residency after graduating.

Choose a program: To get admission to a University, students applying to Canadian institutes must first apply to a program of their choice, one that is in sync with their educational history and work experience.

Apply to the school: Students must get a letter of acceptance from a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI) to get a study permit.

Apply for a study permit: there are four steps to go through here:

  • Eligibility: The requirements are the acceptance letter, financial support proof, and other backing documents.
  • Preparing the application: Eligible students must obtain all required documents, and failure to meet the requirements will result in rejection by an immigration officer. Hence it is better to have a certified immigration agent review the application first.
  • Submission of study permit application: Students can create an account on the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website and electronically apply, or they can get hard copies printed and post them to the Visa Application Centre (VAC) of their country.
  • If the study permit is approved, students are expected to move to Canada: a student permit will be handed over on arrival at the Canadian Port of Entry (POE). After approval of this permit, the government will present the student with a Port of Entry Introduction Letter to be submitted to the immigration office to get the study permit.

Documentation

The documents required for a study permit include a letter of acceptance from the student's school/university, a work permit/passport, and financial support documents. Proof of funds to cover tuition, living expenses and travel expenses are required to complete the financial aid document. Applicants must also be law-abiding citizens of their own country, have no criminal record and be in good health. A personal interview will be held at the embassy regarding proof of the following:

  • Proof of Canadian bank account with a name if there is a money transfer.
  • Proof of a loan from the institute.
  • Bank declaration with a draft in a changed currency.
  • Payment evidence of tuition and resident fee.
